Arrest Made In Attempted Kidnapping, Car Theft In Redlands

REDLANDS (CBSLA.com)  —  Authorities have made an arrest in the attempted kidnapping and car theft outside a Redlands 7-Eleven gas station on Father's Day.

The incident was caught on tape.

A woman went inside to pay for gas, when the suspect jumped into her 2002 Acura TL with her two children inside, one girl aged 10, and the other 2.

The quick-thinking 10-year-old grabbed her sister and jumped out of the vehicle before the suspect took the car. Both girls suffered minor abrasions.

Police looking at surveillance video almost immediately named their suspect as Cory Michael Ahumada, 24, of Highland.

Ahumada was arrested without incident at about 7 p.m. Friday, after Redlands investigators learned that he was at the San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino in the City of Highland.

Redlands detectives responded to the casino, located Ahumada and contacted San Manuel security, who took him into custody.

During the investigation detectives recovered stolen property belonging to the victim. The stolen car has not been recovered.

Police said they got a good look at the suspect who reportedly made a purchase just prior to jumping into the car.

Redlands Police detectives received information indicating Ahumada had been seen in the City of Highland after details of the crime were posted to social media Wednesday.

Anyone with further information regarding this incident is asked to contact Redlands Detective Mike Merriman at (909) 389-6675.
