Around The NFL: Irsay Vs. Manning, Vikes To Start Freeman, Weeden's Job On Craigslist
By Danny Cox
Quarterbacks are always a big story in the NFL as they are the leaders of the team; without a good one, you might as well forget about success. But you've got to be a good quarterback to earn respect, and that may sometimes mean traveling around to different teams before you find your niche and success.
Still, don't go and insult one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. You really don't want to do it when your team is playing that of your ex-quarterback in just mere days.
Jim Irsay insults Peyton Manning, who says he doesn't care, but then Irsay tries to take it back
The Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos are set to play each other this weekend, and Colts owner Jim Irsay has added a lot of fuel to the fire. In a recent interview, Irsay said a lot of things, but essentially said that Manning was let go after 14 seasons because the Colts had won only one Super Bowl.
Manning didn't really care much for the comments and didn't have a lot to say. Broncos coach John Fox said that Irsay's words were "disappointing and inappropriate." Now, Irsay is saying that the comments he made were about the organization as a whole and not about Manning or anyone else in particular.
Whatever the case may be or however they were meant, Irsay's words don't look good. And he just went and verbally slapped Peyton Manning--a QB having a career season --in the face. Sunday's game just got even better.
After being with the team for less than two weeks, the Vikings will start Josh Freeman
Christian Ponder began the season as the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, but inconsistency and a rib injury sidelined him. Matt Cassel got his chance as the starter, but that didn't work out either. Now, former Tampa bay Buccaneers starting quarterback Josh Freeman is getting his turn.
Freeman will start Monday night's game against the winless New York Giants.
Vikings coach Leslie Frazier had planned to give Freeman more time before putting him into a game, but he has been so good in practice that it seemed only right to start him. Ponder will serve as the back-up, but his future status with the team is unknown at this point.
Cleveland Browns fan advertises for starting quarterback on Craigslist
The Cleveland Browns are sitting at 3-3 and tied for second place in the AFC South. That is quite better than anyone expected them to be doing at this point in the season, but fans still aren't happy. Brandon Weeden was not doing so well at quarterback, but then got injured. Brian Hoyer came in and essentially led the team to three straight victories.
Hoyer then got hurt and the former starter returned. In Weeden's first game back as starting quarterback for the Browns, the team lost to the Baltimore Ravens. It was the last straw, and one fan actually put Weeden's job up for grabs on Craigslist.
"Have you played pro football?" asks the ad that 22-year-old Seth Pae, a graduate student at DePaul, took credit for posting. "College ball? High school? Pee-wee?
"Have you played Madden before? Do you know some of the rules of football? If yes, keep reading."
And if no?
"... well also keep reading!" the ad reads. "We will take ANYONE!"
Guess having 19 quarterbacks over a span of 14 years is a bit much for anyone to take.
