Angels Won't Offer Arbitration To DH Matsui

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The Los Angeles Angels will not offer salary arbitration to designated hitter Hideki Matsui.

The decision announced Tuesday means the Angels won't receive a draft pick as compensation if the Japanese veteran signs with another team.

Matsui is a free agent after batting .274 with 21 homers and 84 RBIs for the Angels last season. The longtime Yankees slugger won the 2009 World Series MVP award with New York.

While the Angels have said they're considering re-signing the 36-year-old Matsui, the club also is expected to pursue Tampa Bay outfielder Carl Crawford and other free agents.

Matsui played in 145 games in his first season with Los Angeles, but rarely appeared in the field.
