Angels Could Drop 'Of Anaheim' From Team Name
ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim may soon drop the Orange County city from their official name.
The Anaheim City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on new plans to keep the Angels in the city for the coming decades, but dropping "of Anaheim" from the team's name as part of the deal.
New negotiations could mean that the team would start paying the roughly $600,000 each year in upkeep for the stadium. The Angels could also make a multimillion dollar investment to completely renovate the stadium.
Under a new deal, the team could also develop land around the ballpark for profit.
"That wouldn't bother me, but I don't like the 'Los Angeles' in front," said fan Nancy Bennett, who has attended more than 2,500 games at the stadium. "We're in Anaheim."
Dodgers fan Robert Cavazos agrees. "Their name right now doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but I think Anaheim Angels would be the best name. That's where they're located."
