Angels Break Talks With Anaheim On Stadium Deal
ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) - The Los Angeles Angels ended negotiations Friday afternoon with Anaheim for a new Angel Stadium lease without an agreement.
The team is reportedly frustrated that a deal could not be finalized after more than a year of discussions.
"We stand ready to continue the discussions," interim Anaheim city manager Paul Emery said in a statement. "We believe the Angels will not find a better location, better city partners and, most of all, better fans than here in Anaheim."
Now, the Angels say they will look at all options, and they've already been in talks with Tustin about a possible relocation.
Although the Angels have extensive talks with Tustin, the team has yet to make agreements with the city just south of Santa Ana.
Angels owner Arte Moreno knows that it is unlikely that taxpayers from Tustin or any other city in Southern California will help build a stadium for the team.
"We can afford to build a new stadium," Angels owner Arte Moreno said.
The Angels are on a 20-year deal with FOX Sports West worth $3 billion, or about $150 million per year.
The team told Anaheim it "is hereby electing to terminate" negotiations on the table effective in 30 days.
"It's been over a year," Moreno said. "We've gone backward. We haven't accomplished anything."
The proposed site for Tustin is on land that used to be a Marine Corps base 8 miles southeast of Anaheim.
