Anaheim Police Release Fear-Filled 911 Calls Preceding Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting
ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — Anaheim Police on Sunday released a series of 911 calls that detailed panic in the public preceding their fatal shooting of an armed suspect.
Police said they encountered the suspect Saturday standing over another man -- it turned out to be his brother-in-law. The suspect -- now identified as 30-year-old Danny Rendon -- shot the brother-in-law in the leg (his wound is not considered life-threatening), as well as reportedly firing on a police helicopter and firing at two other random people.
KCAL9''s Brittney Hopper listened to the various calls from a panicked public.
"Somebody is with a gun behind us," said one excited caller.
"No, no. He looked like he was really mad and he had a gun," said another.
"He just fired off a shot right now," said one man.
Anaheim Police said Rendon fired off two shots at random strangers and then hopped into his car and headed to his estranged wife's house.
On the way to her house, he reportedly showed off his gun and threatened at least two other drivers.
At that point, there were more 911 calls.
Once at his estranged wife's house he threatened his brother-in-law and then allegedly shot him.
Police said Rendon followed his brother-in-law into the street and was seen standing over him holding a gun. Police send Rendon fthen ired at the helicopter.
When officers on the ground encountered Rendon, they said they ordered him to drop his weapon. They said he complied but that he refused all other orders.
They said after he refused their other orders they shot and killed him.
Police said it wasn't just the 911 calls that left to the eventual OIS. Cellphone video recorded SWAT officers helping kids crawl out of their apartments nearby. That video, they said, also showed the fear that rippled through the entire neighborhood.
No officers were hurt in the incident.
