Anaheim Ducks Foundation Donates Street Hockey 'Pond' To Local Elementary School
MIDWAY CITY (CBSLA.com) — When the kids of Star View Elementary School returned from Spring Break Monday, they were greeted to a big surprise that could help them skate their way to the pros.
While the students were on break, the Anaheim Ducks Foundation had secretly installed a brand new street hockey rink at the school. (Well, maybe it wasn't a total surprise. The hockey rink was partly visible behind a giant, inflated Ducks jersey and a truck baring the Ducks logo).
But students were plenty excited as they sized-up their new playing surface Monday.
"It's really cool and big," said Isaiah Burney, a student at the school. "I like it."
The rink is sure to be hit, since many of the kids at Star View and nearby schools have become hooked on street hockey.
"I like all the players on the Ducks," goaltender Steven Le said.
Until recently, the kids were playing on a basketball blacktop.
About 100 volunteers helped install the rink, as well as plant trees and paint murals to get it all ready for Monday's big reveal.
The Ducks Foundation, which is comprised of Ducks staff and corporate partners, has installed similar rinks at three other schools in Orange County.
The school is fully supportive, saying the sport can help build communication and teamwork skills, and boost kids' confidence.
"I didn't know I'd be good at hockey 'til I tried it out," student Veronica Moore said.
The rink will be open to all local kids after school lets out each day, too.
