Amazon Sees Sharp Jump In Customer Data Requests From Feds

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The federal government wants to know what you're buying on Amazon.

The retail giant released figures this week showing more than 1,800 data requests from the U.S. government through the first six months of the year, according to a report.

That number marks a huge jump from the same period in 2015, when Amazon received around 850 total requests, ZDNet reported.

According to its June 2016 Information Request Report (PDF), Amazon received more than 1,450 subpoenas so far this year, of which the company fully complied with 42 percent.

More than 200 search warrants - which jumped over eight times the number from the same period last year - were received by Amazon, which complied with 41 percent.

Amazon says it also saw up to nearly 250 national security requests, while zero removal orders were received.

The company debuted its transparency report last year after facing mounting pressure from other major tech companies that already disclose data requests from the U.S. government.
