Amazon.com's San Bernardino Fulfillment Center Stocking Nationwide Orders
SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com/AP) — Online retailers kicked off their biggest day of the year Monday.
Holiday sales are expected to rise 3.9 percent to $602.1 billion, according to the National Retail Federation. Of that, about $78.7 billion is expected to be online, up 15 percent from last year, according to Forrester Research.
Amazon.com's Fulfillment Center in San Bernardino started stocking orders at 12:01 a.m.
The San Bernardino warehouse, which is one of 40 nationwide, is more than 20 football fields in size.
"There's millions and millions of items on shelves. It's fun. It's like Santa's workshop," Amazon spokesman Ty Rogers said.
Top sellers Monday included Call of Duty, Cards Against Humanity and the Kindle, which was being sold for $50 off the regular price.
Other deals included 50 percent off toys and other price cuts on clothing, books, music and more, with new deals being offered every 10 minutes.
"Our customers ordered 306 items every second," Rogers said of Cyber Monday 2012. "And we expect today to be even bigger."
In 2012, Amazon sold more than 26.5 million items on Cyber Monday, which translated to 306 items per second, Rogers said.
