Judge Declines To Rule On Petition For Conservatorship Of Amanda Bynes
OXNARD (CBSLA.com) — A Ventura County judge Friday declined to rule on the conservatorship petition filed by Amanda Bynes' parents, stating that he wanted to see the actress in person.
A new hearing was scheduled for Aug. 9, after Bynes was expected to be released from the Ventura Psychiatric Center.
Bynes was initially placed on an involuntary 5150 psychiatric hold on Monday after she allegedly started a small fire in the driveway of a Thousand Oaks home.
On Thursday, a judge issued a 5250 hold, which extended her evaluation for two weeks.
Both Bynes' public defender and Tamar Arminak, who represents her parents, declined to comment on the hearing.
"I can't tell you about the hearing because of the nature of the case. I think the family just wants their privacy for the next couple of weeks until we sort this out," Arminak said.
Her parents, Lynn and Richard Bynes stated in court documents obtained by CBS2, "we are deeply concerned that Amanda poses a substantial risk to herself, to others, and to property based on recent events in her life."
Her parents also stated in court papers that, "Amanda appears to have a substance abuse problem … "
They went on to say, "Amanda was extremely paranoid about being 'watched,' [She would cover] smoke alarms with towels, tape windows shut, and cover her car's dashboard with cardboard and tape."
Her parents also claim that Bynes has been spending excessive amounts.
They documented $63,000 in checks written between May 3, 2012 and July 19, 2013. In addition, there were two $100,000 withdrawals on June 4 and July 2 of this year. Her parents also claim that Bynes has spent $1.2 million of her $4 million in savings.
The Thousand Oaks fire was the latest in the string of incidents allegedly involving the actress both in Los Angeles and New York.
In recent months, Bynes has demonstrated erratic behavior, including wearing colored wigs and posting controversial tweets.
On May 23, she was arrested for allegedly throwing a bong out of her New York City apartment window. Bynes also faces charges in connection with a hit-and-run and alleged DUI-related incidents in Los Angeles.
Bynes is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 26 in New York City.
