Alleged Shoplifter Dies After Walmart Security Chases Him Down
COVINA (AP) — Police say an alleged shoplifter died at a Southern California Walmart store after he was chased down by store security and fought them in the parking lot.
Covina police Lt. Holly Francisco says when police arrived Friday afternoon, they found the suspect restrained by store security and he appeared to be in medical distress.
Officers called paramedics and the suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Francisco says the petty theft was less than $950. The man had attempted to steal clothes and body wash.
An autopsy is being conducted.
WalMart, Inc. spokeswoman Dianna Gee says the loss of life is a sad situation but there are many unknowns at this time, including cause of death.
Gee says WalMart is providing police its surveillance footage.
