Alleged 'Honeymoon Killer' Arrives In Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles police say an Alabama man who served 18 months in Australian prison for his wife's drowning death has returned to the United States, where he will face prosecution for killing her during their 2003 honeymoon on the Great Barrier Reef.
Lt. Aaron McCraney tells The Associated Press that 33-year-old Gabe Watson had been taken to a local police substation after arriving in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Alabama's attorney general says Watson has been indicted on two murder counts.
Australian officials say he was deported on a commercial flight from Melbourne, and he was accompanied by two Immigration Department staff and three Queensland state police officers.
Watson pleaded guilty last year in Australia to the manslaughter of his wife of 11 days, 26-year-old Tina Watson.
Prosecutors in Alabama want to try Watson again over his wife's death, and are expected to seek murder charges.
