Harvard-Westlake Alum Jonathan Martin At Center Of Miami Dolphins Bullying Case
STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Guard Richie Incognito has been suspected indefinitely by the Miami Dolphins after allegations surfaced about his suspected bullying of teammate and former Harvard-Westlake student Jonathan Martin.
Martin suddenly left the Miami Dolphins organization after fellow lineman Incognito allegedly made racial slurs and threats at him.
One of the messages to Martin displayed a number of expletives.
"I'm going to slap your ------- mouth. I'm going to slap your real mother across the face. ---- you. You're still a rookie. I'll kill you."
The incident has raised the question of whether the NFL has a hazing problem.
Other Miami Dolphins said they did not suspect anything was amiss in the team's locker room.
"I've been here for quite a while. The locker room has been fine as far as I'm concerned," one teammate said. "Then again, you're talking about me. I can't speak for nobody else."
Martin's father, a professor at a local university, said he is unable to talk about the situation, as the NFL is continuing its investigation into the matter.
Martin was an All-Section and All-Mission League selection player as a senior at Harvard-Westlake in 2007. As a junior, he earned All-Mission League honors. He played college football at Stanford.
Harvard-Westlake released a statement in support of their alumnus and his family.
"Harvard-Westlake is extremely proud of Jonathan Martin, and everything he accomplished as a student at our school. We remain supportive of him and his family," the school said.
Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin also touched on the allegations at a news conference, and said that he takes the safety of his players seriously.
"It's very important to me," Philbin said. "I will tell you that if the [NFL] review shows that this is not a safe atmosphere, I will take whatever measures are necessary to ensure that it is."
