Karen Ying Ling, her adoptive mother, told Peschiutta that Cami has been through nine surgeries at the Grossman Burn Center so far.

The family discovered Cami through the nonprofit Children's Burn Foundation, which is funding her care.

"We knew that this was a child that the Children's Burn Foundation had to help," said Carol Horvitz, the Executive Director of the nonprofit organization.

Horvitz says that Cami has had a rough year, but "endured it so well and has a great spirit and a wonderful, loving, supportive family."

The Ying Lings have also adopted two other girls from China and have two biological children.

"It's amazing how blessed we feel but it has not been without trial and suffering," Karen said. "We have a very deep faith. Jesus has said to his followers... 'suffering produces perseverance, produces hope and produces joy' and we really feel like we've walked that."
