Actor Zach Braff Pleads For Movie-Making Money On KROQ
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — When Rob Thomas created a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for a "Veronica Mars" movie, he never imagined he would raise nearly three times the $2 million he was looking for from eager fans.
Other movie makers have apparently decided the public is where the action is.
Former "Scrubs" star Zach Braff — who wrote and directed the acclaimed 2004 comedy "Garden State" — went on KROQ's "Kevin & Bean" show Wednesday and announced he was spearheading a similar campaign to raise funds for his second film, "Wish I Was Here".
Braff told the radio audience that Hollywood was only interested in him making another "Garden State" and he was interested in going beyond churning out carbon copies.
On a four-minute YouTube video explaining why he was going the Kickstarter route, Braff explained simply that the people willing to financially back the movie wanted final cut and approval over casting, things he was not willing to compromise on.
Like Thomas, Braff is hoping to make at least $2 million.
For $10, Braff will send investors a copy of the script. For $10,000 you'll get a speaking line in the movie — and he reports one fan has already paid up.
According to Braff's Kickstarter page, he is 56 percent funded and has raised $1,123,481 with 29 days to go with his campaign.
