93rd Annual LA County Fair Opens In Pomona With Just About Everything Fried
POMONA (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles County Fair kicked off Friday afternoon, featuring food, fun, rides and more at the Fairplex in Pomona!
The official ribbon cutting opening the 93rd annual fair was held at noon, followed by a parade with entertainment, classic cars, floats and local talent.
R&B singers Patti LaBelle and Chaka Khan will kick off the End of Summer Concert Series, presented by Toyota Friday evening.
A limited number of free general admission tickets will be available at the ticket kiosk on Rose Lane. Reserved seats are available at ticketmaster.com or at the Fair box office.
The Fair will also welcome the return of Luminasia, a giant Chinese lantern festival, complete with illuminated Chinese lanterns fashioned after iconic landmarks.
Luminasia will be open from 6 p.m. to closing. Admission is $5, ages 5 and younger are free.
Other attractions this year include Beneath the Sea, Carnival rides, the Flower & Garden Pavilion, a space exhibit, a petting zoo, DJs with live music and more.
CBS2's Joy Benedict talked to excited fair fans.
"It's a tradition. We've come every year since we were married and just had anniversary 42," said Diane Sorensen of Chino.
And what kind of fair would it be without deep fried fare?
This year Benedict says there is fried guacamole and even a deep-fried Slim Fast bar.
A what now?
"It's for the health but you can eat a Slim Fast bar and not feel guilty because inside it's good for you," explains fried food ambassador Chicken Charlie who has 24 different fried items on his menu.
The Los Angeles County Fair, a summer tradition since 1922, runs through Sept. 27.
Any-day admission tickets to the Fair is $12 for adults and $6 for ages 6-12. Tickets are available for purchase at Ralphs and Cardenas Markets. A seasonal pass may be purchased for ages 6 and older, for $29.99. A $62.99 4-day ticket package is also available at Costco, which includes a parking pass and 44 carnival ride/game tickets. Children 5 and younger are free every day. Each Friday, donate five canned goods to receive free admission.
