90-Year-Old Pulled From Burning Hawthorne Home Had Been Shot To Death
HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — A woman in her 90s who was pulled from a burning home in Hawthorne Friday had been shot in the head, officials said.
The woman's son, in his 70s, died on the way to the hospital.
Police are working under the assumption they are dealing with a murder-suicide.
KCAL9's Dave Lopez reported from the scene.
Investigators told him they found the woman passed out in a front room and the son unresponsive in a rest room.
The fire was reported just after noon in the 13200 block of Jefferson Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The sheriff's department said the woman was declared dead at the scene.
There was no immediate word on what caused the death of her son, or what started the fire.
It took firefighters nearly 20 minutes to extinguish the flames, County Fire Department Inspector Gustavo Medina said.
Hawthorne Police later summoned Sheriff's Homicide Detectives to assist in the investigation into the deaths.
Authorities told Lopez that last November, officer's were called to the home about a man in his 70s who was threatening suicide.
