10-Year-Old Killed, 6 Injured In 3-Vehicle Anaheim DUI Collision
ORANGE COUNTY (CBSLA.com) — A 10-year-old boy was killed and six others injured in a suspected DUI crash in Anaheim overnight.
According to the Anaheim Police Department, officers were sent just before midnight Saturday to the area of Euclid Street and West La Palma Avenue for report of a multi-vehicle crash.
Once on scene, officers found three vehicles — a silver Toyota Camry, a silver Honda and a black pickup truck — involved in the accident.
A family of five were reportedly pulled out of a Norm's Restaurant parking lot and were heading South in their silver Camry, when a man in his 40s driving the pickup truck rear ended them.
"Inside the Camry was a family of five," said Lt. Bob Dunn of the Anaheim Police Department. "A mother and father were in the front seat and three children in the back seat."
One of the children, a 10-year-old victim, was killed in the accident. The other two children were transported with critical injuries.
Police originally said the deceased was 9 but family members told CBS2's Greg Mills that the victim turned 10 this past February.
The mother and father were also transported to UCI Medical Center and were listed with critical injuries.
KCAL9's Joy Benedict spoke with family and friends Sunday morning who placed candles and flowers on the sidewalk to honor the young boy killed.
A silver Honda was also parked at the intersection and crashed into the Camry by chain reaction. There were two passengers in this vehicle and one was transported with an unknown condition.
Officers charged the male driver of the pickup truck with suspicion of driving under the influence.
Authorities have identified the driver as Gary S. Hunt, 41, of Orange.
The family of five said attended a carnival prior to the crash and stopped for a late night snack at the restaurant.
The deceased has been identified as Isaiah Rafael Ramirez.
Mills reported from a makeshift memorial -- the boy's grandmother collapsed.
One witness returned to the scene to try to process what happened.
"To see a kid, hit by a drunk driver, actually try to get saved by paramedics, it was just such an impact to me," said Frank Sanchez choking back tears.
The other victims -- including the boy's mother, stepfather and two sisters, were all treated at UCI Medical Center and released.
