11 Hurt In Leak At Wilmington Oil Refinery

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Nearly a dozen people were injured Tuesday after a reported leak at a refinery in the city of Wilmington, officials said.

A hazardous materials team was on hand to investigate the scene at the Phillips 66 refinery located at 1660 West Anaheim Street, according to Katherine Main of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Investigators said the problem was localized within the grounds of the refinery, where workers had been exposed to sulfur dioxide gas.

Other workers were told to shelter in place inside buildings on the refinery, which sits west of the Harbor (110) Freeway and south of Anaheim Street, officials said.

As many as 11 patients had been treated for minor respiratory problems, Main said.

The leak was reportedly contained as of 10:26 a.m., officials said.

The incident posed no danger to surrounding community, said Main.
