89 Displaced After Fire Erupts In Santa Ana Apartment Building
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A fire that broke out in an unoccupied unit of a three-story apartment building in Santa Ana has forced nearly 90 people to evacuate their homes.
Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi told CBS2/KCAL9 News 89 people have been displaced from the Rosewood Villa Apartment Complex in the 100 block of North Ross Street.
Flames erupted in the third-story unit at approximately 2:52 p.m., Concialdi said.
Fourteen units were affected by fire, water or smoke. Sprinklers kept the fire from spreading past the unit of origin.
"The sprinklers did an excellent job of keeping the fire in check and not allowing [it] to spread," Concialdi told City News Service.
"If there were no sprinklers, this fire would have gone into the attic and a number of apartments."
No injuries have been reported.
Affected residents are being sheltered in the complex's community center.
The American Red Cross is assessing how many residents will need housing, food and other supplies.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
