150 Bales Of Marijuana Found On Disabled Boat, 2 Men Arrested
OXNARD (CBS) — Two men are in custody Monday after approximately 150 bales of marijuana were found in plain view on their disabled boat just outside Channel Islands Harbor.
The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the disabled boat about 3 a.m. Monday just three miles outside the harbor, according to Lt. Timothy McGhee. After towing the boat in to the Channel Islands Coast Guard station, the marijuana bales were found in plain sight during a routine safety check, he said.
The Coast Guard seized the bales of marijuana, an estimated to be at least 2,500 pounds, McGhee said. An estimate on the street worth of the drugs was not available.
The 27-foot boat is a pleasure craft very different from the panga boats that have been landing in the area, he said.
"It blends in with other boats in the harbor," McGhee said.
It's not known what caused the boat to be disabled, he said.
The two men, whose names were not released, asked to be towed into Ventura Harbor, McGhee said, but its not known if that was their intended destination. Where the boat originated was also not known.
