Brush Fire Along 5 Freeway Near Castaic Knocked Down

CASTAIC (CBSLA.com) — Firefighters worked Friday knocked down a brush fire that scorched as much as 15 acres in the Castaic area.

The fire was reported about noon near the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway at Templin Highway, according to the county fire department.

Flames quickly grew from an initial three acres to "holding at 15 acres" as of about 1:15 p.m., said Nathan Judy of the U.S. Forest Service.

Two SuperScooper airplanes and five helicopters were sent to the scene, the county fire department reported.

Winds were about 10 miles per hour, which are strong enough to push the fire into canyons and hills, Los Angeles County Fire spokesman Christopher Reid told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO.

About 115 firefighters were on the scene, Reid said.

Authorities reported Friday afternoon that the fire was knocked down.
