$50M Auditorium Sets Stage For Garfield High Rebuilding Efforts

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Four years after an arson fire gutted the historic auditorium at Garfield High School, reconstruction efforts began on Monday with a unique vision for the future.

The project — funded by a combination of insurance money and commitments from the LAUSD — will cost an estimated $50 million to rebuild the demolished auditorium and interlocked administration buildings.

KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou reports Garfield assistant principal Mark Knalls expects the new structure will be up to 21st-century standards.

"Also contained in the auditorium is going to be the Black Box Theater, which we're also very excited about," said Knalls.

He said the school is already planning the first theater arts productions for the new auditorium.

"It's going to be a very exciting venue — and a large venue too, approximately 1,400 seats," Knalls added.

The timeline for completion of the project stretches from late 2010 to early 2013.
