$50K Reward Offered In Mid-City Hit-And-Run Crash That Killed Mother

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A $50,000 reward was offered Friday in hopes of generating tips leading to the hit-and-run driver responsible for the death of a 31-year-old mother in the Mid-City area.

City Councilman Herb Wesson said the life of Angelyn Cobarrubia was "snuffed out, probably walking distance from my home," and it might be one of the first hit-and-run collisions after the City Council approved automatic reward offers in such cases.

"That reward will be issued and if you're out there -- the individual who committed this crime -- it's best that you just turn yourself in," Wesson said.

Cobarrubia was killed at about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday when her car was rear-ended by the driver of an apparently speeding vehicle in the 5200 block of West Washington Boulevard, causing her to crash into a utility pole.

Her 2-year-old daughter, who was riding in the Nissan Altima with her, survived the crash.

Police on Wednesday said they were trying to determine if street racing or road rage were involved in the crash, and are also searching for the drivers of two vehicles – one that struck Cobarrubia's car but was driven away and another that stopped briefly at the scene before leaving.

Authorities said there are at least four videos in the area that may have caught the collision. Detectives believe the hit-and-run driver was speeding east on Washington and struck Cobarrubia's car from behind, causing her to lose control.

Anyone with information about the driver responsible for Cobarrubia's death can contact West Traffic Division detectives at (213) 473-0234.
