5 Pro Athletes Who've Played For Their Fathers
Having players play for their fathers is pretty common growing up playing in sports, but at the pro level, it's rare. With the help of genetics, there have been only handful of father-son combos in professional sports, including legendary Yogi Berra and his son Dale. Austin Rivers became the first NBA player to play for his father on Jan. 16 2015, while Bill and Kevin Dineen did the same in the NHL in 1991. Bruce and Brett Bochy (San Francisco Giants)
Bruce Bochy is the most recent manager to coach his son, Brett, in Major League Baseball. Brett appeared in three games for the Giants in 2014, making his debut Sept. 12 against the Dodgers, where they lost 17-0. He only pitched 3.1 innings in 2014 and allowed a home run to Scott Van Slyke in his major league debut. Bruce has won three World Series titles with the Giants.
Yogi and Dale Berra – (New York Yankees)
Legendary Yogi Berra coached his son Dale for a few games while managing the New York Yankees in 1985. However, while Dale played 16 games and batted .343 for his father, Yogi was fired after starting 6-10. Dale has an MLB record for playing the most games by any son of a Hall-of-Famer (853). After his baseball career, Dale was charged with cocaine possession in 1989.
Moises and Felipe Alou (Giants and Montreal Expos)
Moises Alou had the unique privilege to play for his father Felipe for many years in the majors. Felipe managed his son with the Montreal Expos from 1992 to 1996 and again in 2005 with the Giants. Felipe and Moises are in a rare father-son duo club along with Cecil and Prince Fielder and the Bobby-Barry Bonds combo with 25-plus home runs each.
Bill and Kevin Dineen (Philadelphia Flyers)
Within a few weeks at the start of the 1991 season, the Flyers acquired right wing Kevin Dineen and his father Bill to coach after the club got off to an 8-14-2 start. During Kevin's time playing for his father, he scored the second-most goals on the team with 26. Now, Kevin is an assistant for the Chicago Blackhawks. As for the elder Dineen, Bill is known for playing for Detroit as he broke a Red Wings rookie record in the 1953-'54 season by playing 70 games and winning two Stanley Cups.
Doc and Austin Rivers (Los Angeles Clippers)
Austin Rivers is the first NBA player to play for a team coached by his father. Doc's team acquired his son, who went to Duke Universiry, on Jan. 16, 2015, after waiving former UCLA Bruin and Lakers guard Jordan Farmar.
