10 Freeway Reopens After Fiery Rialto Crash That Killed 5
RIALTO (CBSLA) -- The 10 freeway was shut down for about 18 hours following a fiery crash involving multiple vehicles that killed five people Friday afternoon in Rialto.
The incident happened on Interstate 10 at Riverside Avenue just before 1 p.m.
A concrete-pumping truck traveling west on the 10 Freeway lost control, crashed through the guardrail into oncoming traffic and caught fire, according to California Highway Patrol.
As a result of the crash, the truck ended up hitting three cars, a truck and a motorcycle. The cause of the crash is still unknown.
The CHP says that a total of six vehicles were involved in the deadly accident that killed five and sent the driver of the truck to the hospital. He is expected to survive. Authorities were interviewing the driver to find out why he lost control of the truck and ended up in the eastbound lane.
The freeway was all-or-partly closed for about 18 hours. California Highway Patrol didn't fully reopen both sides of the freeway until around 6 a.m. Saturday.
KCLA9 Friday night spoke to several people who described the traffic nightmare created by the standstill. One woman said it took her five hours to get through.
"Five hours, exactly five hours," Sally Arif told CBS2.
Driver Leah Serrano noticed many frustrated people trying to use the carpool lane.
"People trying to pass through on the emergency lanes. Just lots of crazy people," she said.
At around 10 p.m., traffic was being funneled off I-10 at Riverside Avenue.
The CHP is asking anyone who might have dash cam video of the crash to contact them.
