Sassafras Saloon is yet another fantastic watering hole from the masterminds of the 1933 Bar Group who brought you the Bigfoot Lodge, Thirsty Crow and their newest valley libation addition Idle Hour. Sassafras stands apart from the others with moody decor resembling New Orleans style homes, which plays to the eye and stellar service that plays to the ego. This combination of innovation and hospitality makes it one of the more popular haunts on Vine. But it's the evolving cocktails that are the real hit as they appeal to the palate and hit their mark season after season.
This season nostalgia-inspired cocktails are currently trending and Sassafras has put out their cocktail "A" game. In keeping with the New Orleans theme, Chris Whelan and Kalani Ben took classic New Orleans flavors and revamped a few popular cocktails of past decades. From a Mai Tai to a Pink Squirrel to a Paper Plane and a bunch in between, you'll love the delightful twists in store for you at Sassafras. Here are the top five off the new cocktail menu to whet your appetite.
Sassafras gives this Scooby Snack inspired cocktail a sophisticated build (Bacardi, Midori, Giffard Banane Du Bresil, coconut cream, pineapple) but will still satisfy your sweet tooth and inner sorority girl. It's perfect for a round of shots or over ice for a casual cocktail.
Sex on the Beach? How about Sex on the Bayou? It's the perfect blend of Aylesbury Duck Vodka, Giffard Peche De Vigne, Strawberry Lime Shrub, cranberry, orange and lime. It's not the typical cocktail sweet that sends your mind to an exotic white sandy beach, but more like a serene river bank somewhere in Louisiana. The rich color gives it mystique and the taste is just as orgasmic as the original.
The Tequila Sunrise is as delicious as it is simple with its three ingredients (tequila, oj and grenadine). But by adding Kina L'Aéro d' to the mix you've got the Delta Sunset that's quite heavenly. It's another great cocktail to sit back and relax whether with friends or a little alone time.
The Paper Plane, while it had the making of being something spectacular in its hayday, simply fell short and was forgotten. But with a few Sassafras modifications you've got the Oaxacan Airboat (Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, Amaro Nonino, Aperol, lime, agave) and a cocktail impossible to forget. A little sweet and a little tart, but a whole lot of deliciousness.
The inspiration of the Bywater Breeze is unknown, but one sip and you'll care less about where it came from and more about getting yourself another. Built with Rutte Celery Gin, Chareau Aloe Liqueur, Celery-Apple Shrub, lime and Bergamot Bitters, the ingredients list may sound like a peculiar tasting blend, but fear not. Sassafras knows how to do strange in the best way possible. Give it a try. You'll be happy you did.
