Shoppers Hit Stores For 'Gray Thursday' Deals

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) — Many customers Thursday have started Black Friday shopping…a day early.

Kmart, which has been open on the holiday for 22 consecutive years, opened at 6 a.m. and will remain open until 11 p.m. Friday.

KNX1070's Jon Baird, who was there when the store opened it doors, said shoppers were making a mad dash to the electronics department.

"We saved basically combined $200 on tablets," one man told him.

"Usually there's always a fight and pushing and shoving and usually it's pretty crazy, but today was actually mellow — it was really nice," a woman said.

Macy's, a 155-year-old chain, will open stores for the first time on Thanksgiving at 8 p.m. "in response to interest from customers who prefer to start their shopping early," according to a corporate statement.

Holiday hours at Wal-Mart vary, but the world's largest retailer will give customers in line between 6 p.m.—7 p.m. and 8 p.m.—9 p.m. the opportunity to purchase certain products at discounted prices.

Toys R Us will be open at 5 p.m., three hours earlier than last year. Best Buy will open doors at 6 p.m. and Target, Kohl's and Sears will open at 8 p.m.

Surveys indicate a significant minority of those polled plan to shop on Thanksgiving, while the majority object to stores being open.
