400,000 Revelers Expected To Descend On Huntington Beach
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBS) — Police will be out in force Monday, as 400,000 people are expected to descend on Huntington Beach.
Fourth of July festivities have been plagued by fights, fires and riots in the past, but police say the holiday has been relatively quiet in recent years.
However, with a recent spike in drunk driving and alcohol-related crimes, authorities aren't taking any chances.
Every law enforcement officer in the city's police department will be on duty, and the city even spent $24,000 to hire a private security firm. California Highway Patrol and sheriff's deputies will also be on patrol.
If you're heading to the beach, some major roadways will be closed because of an oil spill.
Firefighters say at least 850 gallons of crude oil bubbled out of an underground pipeline when it broke Friday.
Golden West Street, a major artery linking the 405 Freeway with the beach, will remain closed near Ellis Avenue throughout the day.
