According to Mertz, the police cruiser collided with a vehicle near Florence Avenue and Avalon Boulevard. A witness told Mertz that the cruiser also crashed into a pole.
The officers were hospitalized as a precautionary measure. The person in the other vehicle was not hurt.
Elsewhere in San Pedro, two Port officers and another driver were hospitalized after police said the cruiser was rear-ended by a suspected drunken driver.
LAPD South Traffic Sgt. Dana Adams said the crash happened during a traffic stop.
"That person was arrested for felony DUI," the sergeant said.
The conditions of those two officers and the suspect have not been released.
