4 Detained In Connection With Downey Shootings

DOWNEY (CBSLA.com) — One person remains detained in connection with Wednesday's shootings that killed three people in Downey.

Police initially detained four people in connection with the incident but released three of them later Thursday.

Five people were shot during a rampage at a fire extinguisher business and a nearby home. Police said two women and a man were killed, who were later identified as Susana Perez-Ruelas, 34, Irene Cardenas , 35, and 26-year-old Josimar Rojas.

"We do not believe that this was a random act of violence. We believe the victims were targeted for a specific reason," a Downey police officer said during a news conference Thursday night.

Investigators were questioning the male suspect but have not placed him under arrest, according to CBS2/KCAL9's Carter Evans.

The news comes in the wake of the stunning revelation that the shooting rampage was over a 2010 Camaro that was advertised for sale on Craigslist.

A source close to the Salinas family, which owns U.S. Fire Protection, says a stranger responded to the ad, arriving at the business Wednesday morning. When he was told the car was not at the business, he pulled a gun, shot and killed a man and a woman and wounded another woman who played dead, according to the source.

The shooter then kidnapped a fourth woman and forced her to take him to the Downey home, the source said. At the home, he shot and killed the woman and wounded her 13-year-old son, according to the source, before stealing the Camaro.

Downey police said they don't suspect the car theft motivated the shooting spree.

Dean Wright, who owns the business next door, said one of owners of U.S. Fire Protection, Robert Salinas, told him that's what happened.
