3rd Student In San Bernardino County School District Dies From Apparent Suicide
ORO GRANDE (CBSLA.com) — A third student enrolled in a San Bernardino County school district has died from an apparent suicide.
KCAL9's Crystal Cruz said three teenagers in the Oro Grande School District have reportedly committed suicide in recent months.
Joey Calhoun, a 13-year-old seventh-grade student at Riverside Preparatory Middle School, was the latest victim.
Erik Hughes said he found out Thursday morning that Calhoun, his daughter's boyfriend, passed away.
"[Calhoun] was very respectful, good grades, good kid," he said.
Some parents have taken their children out of Riverside Preparatory Middle School despite counselors being available to the students.
"I don't feel secure putting them back in that school, but I'm hoping I raised them well enough to know that they can come to me with any problem they have," said Joanne Nichols, who added that she heard a rumor about a suicide pact.
Oro Grande Superintendent Heather Griggs released a statement, which said, "We are shocked and saddened at the news of the death of Riverside Preparatory Middle School student Joey Calhoun this morning. Our hearts are with the family during this difficult time. We pledge our support to Joey's family and friends as we all deal with this tragedy. In light of this heartbreaking incident, we encourage everyone to refrain from speculating about the situation as all facts are gathered. Now, more than ever, we must support one another during this incredibly difficult time for our students and staff. The safety of our students is our top priority at Riverside Preparatory School. We will continue to work with Joey's family and all those affected by having grief counselors at the school throughout the next week, as we provide a safe and nurturing environment for our students."
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department does not believe Calhoun's death is connected to bullying or the two other students.
