$375K In Repairs Made To Getty House Before Garcetti Family Moves In
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Since July, the city has paid about $375,000 for repairs to the Getty House, where Mayor Eric Garcetti plans to live with his family.
City crews have been working to perform "deferred maintenance" on the 92-year-old Hancock Park property since July 1, mayoral spokeswoman Vicki Curry said. The work on the three-story mansion has included asbestos and lead paint removal, termite spraying, lock replacement, carpentry, electrical and water damage repairs and interior and exterior painting, she said.
Garcetti recently announced that he and his family, now living in Silver Lake, have decided to move into Getty House in a few weeks.
The repairs were already being performed prior to their decision to move, Garcetti said Tuesday while taking part in City Hall menorah-lighting festivities.
The Getty House, which Los Angeles' mayors have traditionally used for greeting dignitaries and holding luncheons, speaking events and other functions, is considered a "public building used for public services," Garcetti said.
The repairs were going to be done "regardless," he said. "We hold events there all the time."
Garcetti's family will pay for any repairs or upgrades to the private quarters of the house, he said.
The house was given to the city in 1975 by the Getty Oil Co.
