20-Year-Old Man, Child Wounded In Downey Shooting
DOWNEY (CBSLA.com) — A man and his young daughter were wounded Friday in a shooting in Downey.
Gunfire erupted just after 4:30 p.m. at an apartment complex at Telegraph Road near Paramount Boulevard.
The victims were identified by witnesses as a 20-year-old man and his 2-year-old daughter, named Katie.
Witnesses told Kristine Lazar, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, that the man was holding the toddler when he was shot multiple times in the back.
At least one of the bullets reportedly grazed the child, who authorities say, was breathing and conscious.
Saturday friends tell CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Greg Mills, "after surgery, the child is doing just fine."
Her father was taken to a different hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
Sarrah Lopez, a witness to the shooting, told Mills, "I freaked out. And I called 911, too. And I told them to rush an ambulance here because the little girl was also hit. And I felt bad because, her mom, I felt so bad for her mom. Her mom was crying, she was hysterical."
Ashley Gonzales, another witness, told Mills she heard "five gunshots." She also watched later as the victims collapsed in the courtyard. "I saw his lips turn white and his eyes were rolling back."
Police have questioned and detained one man and are looking for three others.
Authorities say the shooting was gang-related and followed an argument the victim had with his assailants.
