PARAMOUNT (CBS) — Three people are dead and three others are critically injured after a single-vehicle crash in Paramount.

"We know that the vehicle was traveling southbound on Downey Avenue at a high rate of speed . . .  when he lost control of the vehicle, striking the curb, took out a light pole, part of a fence and a fire hydrant," Det. Mark Campbell said.

Five of six people in the SUV were then ejected before the vehicle caught fire. The remaining person inside the SUV died in the blaze.

"It was extremely loud, and then I kept hearing other loud explosive sounds as well," nearby resident April Davis told CBS2.

Authorities say the critically injured victims are expected to survive.

The victims were in their 20s and 30, according to sheriff's officials.

It is unknown if alcohol was involved in the crash.
