200 Flammable Cotton Mattresses From China Seized
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Hundreds of cotton mattresses from China were seized at the Los Angeles/Long Beach seaport complex for failing to meet federal safety standards.
The mattresses were burn-tested in a Consumer Product Safety Commission laboratory and were found to be in violation of the Flammable Fabrics Act, officials from U.S. Customs and Border Protection said. A total of 200 mattresses were seized.
The law establishes a federal flammability standard that limits the spread and intensity in a mattress fire and gives consumers about 30 minutes to escape in the event of a blaze.
Officials said the seized mattresses also bore labels that failed to meet standards because they did not include the manufacturer's address, date (month and year) of manufacture or prototype identification number.
Mattresses manufactured on or after July 1, 2007 must meet federal flammability requirements and be labeled with manufacturer and importer information.
