2 Young Children Nearly-Drown In Separate Valley Pool Accidents
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Two San Fernando Valley children nearly-drowned Sunday in separate pool accidents.
The first near drowning was reported at 3:01 p.m. in the 16600 block of Runnymede Street in Van Nuys, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The child, an eight-year-old boy, dove in to a pool head first, hitting his head on the bottom of the pool, Humphrey said.
"The boy's teenage sister rescued him from the pool," Humphrey said.
He was unconscious for about a minute before help arrived and he was taken to Northridge Hospital in fair condition.
The second near drowning occurred around 3:45 p.m. at the aquatic park at Hansen Dam, in the 12000 block of Osborne Street, Humphrey continued.
A four-year-old girl was rescued unconscious, Humphrey added. The girl was airlifted to a Children's Hospital Los Angeles in fair condition.
"These incidents underscore the importance of water safety and of always having someone, preferably an adult, supervising and watching the water at all times," Humphrey said.
