2 Water Main Break Hit LA Neighborhoods Within 3 Miles Of Each Other
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Water main breaks hit two neighborhoods just a few hours and within three miles from each other early Thursday morning.
The 6-inch pipe, which officials say was installed in 1912, burst about 1 a.m. Thursday along north Robinson in the Westlake District, sending water flowing into the neighborhood and under the asphalt. A large sinkhole developed in the middle of the street as a result of the water main break.
Water was shut off to 42 homes in the area and crews are on the scene working on repairing the pipe. Service restored to the area at about 7:40 a.m.
About an hour later and three miles away, another water main burst in Hancock Park, not far from a break that happened about week before.
A third water main break was reported near LAX at about 8:40 a.m., prompting the closure of 96th Street between Vicksburg and Jenny.
The city of Los Angeles has about 6,000 miles of pipes, and LADWP says they have a plan to replace 215,000 feet of old pipe by 2025.
