2 Small Brush Fires Erupt In Malibu

MALIBU (CBSLA.com) — Two small brush fires Saturday erupted in western Malibu, according to firefighters.

Cheryl Sims, supervising dispatcher for the Los Angeles County Fire Department, said a 5-acre fire was burning at the top of Encinal Canyon.

That fire was reported at 1:11 p.m. and prompted the closure of Encinal Canyon Road just north of Pacific Coast Highway and up to Lechusa Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

"The fire is burning in dense, heavy brush," Sims said. "We have helicopters making water drops."

Sims said no injuries were immediately reported. No structures were threatened.

A second fire had erupted south and west of the Point Dume Club, a mobile home community famous for million-dollar, ocean-view coaches.

By 3 p.m., however, firefighters had put out the approximately 1-acre fire and were in mop-up mode.

No further information was immediately available.
