2 People Killed In 2-Vehicle Head-On Crash In Hemet

HEMET (CBSLA.com) — Two people were killed Saturday when two vehicles collided into each other head-on in Hemet.

The accident occurred about 11:34 a.m. on Highway 74 just east of Warren Road, according to authorities.

A Dodge Caliber was headed east on 74 -- and was approaching Warren Road -- when the driver steered around a vehicle that was stopped, waiting to make a left turn into a gas station, said Hemet Police Sgt. Randy Young.

The driver of the Dodge, a 51-year-old man, veered into opposing lanes and struck a Honda Pilot with three people inside, Young said. The Dodge overturned, he said.

A 61-year-old woman in the Dodge died at the scene and the man succumbed to his injuries after being taken to a hospital, Young said.

Three people in the Honda sustained minor to moderate injuries and were also hospitalized, he said.

Highway 74 was closed for about five hours, Young said.

The names of the deceased were withheld pending notification of family.
