2 OC Sisters Quit University Of New Mexico Soccer Team Over Hazing Incident
TRABUCO CANYON (CBSLA.com/AP) — Orange County twin girls may have been victims of hazing by members of the University of New Mexico women's soccer team where players were allegedly sprayed with cleaner and forced to drink alcohol.
Freshman Danielle and Devin Scelsi, of Trabuco Canyon, quit the team Tuesday and withdrew from school.
University police were sent to a dormitory on campus Sunday night in reference to a student who was highly intoxicated. Danielle Scelsi, 18, told police her sister was having trouble breathing and appeared to be vomiting.
Two other 18-year-olds in the apartment also appeared to be intoxicated and had to be hospitalized, according to the police report.
University officials revealed the team made stops at several houses that night, alcohol was consumed and at some point, liquid soap or window cleaner was sprayed on the freshmen players.
"We failed. There is no question that hazing was involved in this incident," Athletic Director Paul Krebs said.
The team's season opener was canceled as punishment. Players also have to participate in mandatory hazing-education classes and perform community service.
