2 Men Plead Guilty In String Of Chase Bank ATM Robberies

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Two men responsible for a series of ATM robberies have pleaded guilty to participating in a conspiracy that stole nearly a half a million dollars.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, David Joseph Silva Jr., 25, of Fontana pleaded guilty Monday to participating in the conspiracy to commit bank larceny.

James William Costilow, 38, of Riverside pleaded guilty Nov. 10 to the same conspiracy charge.

Silva and Costilow admitted to breaking into JP Morgan Chase Bank ATMs in three different counties on 15 occasions over a six-month period, authorities explained.

During some of the robberies, the men stole entire machines and later used power tools to gain access to the safe inside the machines.

The pair successfully broke into safes inside the ATMs on four occasions and conspired to steal $462,093 in cash.

Officials explained the duo was arrested Sept. 22 after an unsuccessful ATM robbery in Murrieta.

The men attempted to cut the hinges off the safe doors, and then tried to pull off the doors with their truck.

The robbery failed when the bumper came off of the truck.

The FBI and Murrieta Police Department investigated this case.

The two men face a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison. They are expected to appear in court for sentencing in February.
