2 US Marines Hospitalized After Intervening In Baseball Fans' Fight
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Two suspects are facing assault charges Monday while two of three U.S. Marines, who were injured in a street fight over the weekend, remain hospitalized.
Manuel Alexis Alvarez, 23, of Downey, and Victoria Robledo, 20, of Norwalk, were booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, but both were released on bail on Sunday, according to Huntington Beach police Lt. Mitch O'Brien.
Four additional suspects, detained on the same suspicion, included Paul Santino Forno, 22, of Whittier, Daniel Maadan, 24, of Whittier, Erik Alexander Gomez-Chavez, 27, of Norwalk, and Jessica Perez, 22, of Downey. All four were released without being booked.
The Marines, on leave from Camp Pendleton, reportedly came to the aid of a fan of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who was being attacked by Alvarez and Robledo at around 1:45 a.m. Sunday morning, after the Angels and Dodgers had played an exhibition game in Anaheim.
A woman in Angels apparel was approached by two other women, with a fight resulting from the confrontation, according to Lt. O'Brien.
"That's when the Marines come along and try to break it up," O'Brien said, adding that several male friends became involved.
One of the Marines was reportedly stabbed in the face with a broken bottle right in front of Huntington Beach officers who were "detaining people all over the place," O'Brien said.
Another Marine was found about a half-block away bleeding, and was unable to identify the man who had stabbed him. The injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening.
A third Marine involved in the fight was treated for injuries at a San Diego hospital, and was released.
Huntington Beach resident George Ferguson, who captured cell phone video footage of the fight, said the violence escalated quickly.
"The girls got a little out of control and started hitting each other," Ferguson said.
This is not the first incident in which hooligans in baseball paraphernalia have found excuses to fight. San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow is still recovering after a beating outside Dodger Stadium nearly claimed his life on Opening Day, 2011.
