2 Killed When Alleged Drunk Driver Strikes Big Rig On 405 Freeway In Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — Two people were killed early Saturday morning when a 2008 Toyota -- being driven by an alleged drunk driver -- slammed into a big rig.

The crash was reported at 2:51 a.m. on the southbound side of the freeway at Rosecrans Avenue.

The two deceased -- passengers in the Toyota -- were declared dead at the scene.

Two people -- including the alleged drunk driver -- were transported to a hospital. The alleged DUI driver had moderate injuries.

The deceased were later identified as Stefanie Ramirez and Rene Romero, both 25 and from Compton.

Marvin Arriola, 30, of Gardena was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the CHP.

Officials said the crash was due to Arriola's level of intoxication and driving his vehicle at "a high rate of speed."

After the Toyota struck the big rig, the disabled Toyota was struck by a Volvo. The driver of the Volvo reportedly suffered a minor injury. The big rig driver was uninjured.

The Rosecrans off-ramp and right lane of the freeway were closed for hours while the CHP investigated.
