Father, 3-Year-Old Son Killed In 405 Freeway Crash
SEAL BEACH (CBSLA) — A man and his young son were killed early Friday morning after their disabled vehicle was struck on the southbound 405 Freeway in Seal Beach.
The 2:30 a.m. accident happened just north of the Seal Beach Boulevard exit, blocking several lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol. A SigAlert was issued until further notice.
The 39-year-old man and his 3-year-old son had just gotten out of their disabled 2011 Honda CRV when it was rear-ended by a 2006 Toyota Rav4.
The pair was also struck in the collision. They were pronounced dead at the scene, Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Capt. Steve Concialdi said.
The man's wife and 10-year-old daughter had stayed in the car and were injured in the crash. They were taken to a hospital, with the girl in serious condition and the woman with moderate injuries, Concialdi said.
A 47-year-old woman driving the Toyota Rav4 was also taken to a hospital with moderate injuries.
"This is a highway," California Highway Patrol Officer Duane Graham said. "If you become disabled for any reason, if you can't safely make your way to the shoulder, you want to stay within the vehicle if you can, keep everyone restrained within the vehicle and call 911 to get help."
Several lanes were blocked immediately after the crash and during the subsequent investigation.
