The cause of the crash was under investigation.
The force of the crash split one of the cars in half.
The Jetta, which was heading northbound on Coast Highway, may have attempted an unsafe pass around the Mini Cooper, Lt. Jeff Hallock of the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.
