2 Dead, 2 Injured In Azusa Shooting

AZUSA (CBSLA.com/AP) — Authorities say a gunman is dead after killing a man and critically wounding two women not far from two polling places that were closed as a result.

They say the assault rifle attack in Azusa wasn't election-related.

The two polling sites were shut down for several hours Tuesday while officers surrounded a home where the gunman's body was found. One later reopened.

Authorities called to the scene got into a gunbattle and police say it's unclear whether they fatally wounded the gunman or he killed himself. No officers were hurt.

The shooting took place not far from several schools, including one that was serving as a polling place, and across the street from a park that also had a polling site.

Police don't have a specific motive for the shootings.

The names of the gunman and the dead man haven't been released. The wounded victims are described as two women in their mid-50s.

Authorities responded to West Fifth Streeet and North Orange Avenue Tuesday afternoon shortly after 2 p.m.

Officers "were met with gunfire at the scene" and found themselves "pinned down" by gunfire, Azusa police Officer Jerry Willison said. Authorities worked to extract the pinned-down officers, Wilison said.

The gunman reportedly then holed up in a home in the 500 block of Fourth Street, which was surrounded by SWAT personnel. The suspect was believed to be armed with an assault rifle.

Multiple ambulances could be seen at the scene from Sky 9. A triage area was set up to treat patients at the scene.

Four people were transported to hospitals after the shooting, said Vanessa Lozano of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. One of them was declared dead upon arrival.

The shooting occurred near Slauson Middle School, which was placed on lockdown.

LA County Registrar Dean Logan said two polling places -- Memorial Park and Dalton Elementary School -- were impacted by the shooting and that voters should seek out alternative polling places.

The lockdown was later lifted at Dalton Elementary School.

Two of the gunshot wound patients were in critical condition, Azusa police said.
