SAN PEDRO (CBSLA.com) — A wrong-way driver struck several vehicles on the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, injuring at least two people and then threatened to jump from the bridge until a passerby pulled him to safety, authorities said.
This chaotic situation began about 11:30 a.m., a representative of the California Highway Patrol said, when the unidentified driver struck several vehicles on the bridge, injuring at least two people who were transported to a local hospital. The condition of the two victims was not immediately known.
After the crashes, the motorist then climbed onto the bridge and threatened to jump, the LAPD and CHP said.
LAPD officers and possibly CHP officers attempted to talk the man down from the bridge, authorities said. The driver's motive was not known.
The man was eventually stopped from jumping when a passerby grabbed him and pulled him down, authorities said.
The motorist was then sent to a hospital for treatment and observation.
A CHP investigation into the incident is underway.
