2 Dead, 2 Hurt In 4-Vehicle Wreck On 405 Freeway In Costa Mesa
COSTA MESA (CBSLA) — A multi-vehicle crash left two people dead and two others injured Friday evening on the northbound 405 Freeway in Costa Mesa, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash took place about 8:35 p.m. near the Harbor Boulevard on-ramp, according to the CHP. The crash may have involved as many as four vehicles.
The two dead included a man and a woman who were riding in the same vehicle, Costa Mesa Fire Department Capt. Chris Coates said. Their names were withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Another man and woman were injured, Coates said. They were transported to a hospital for treatment, where their conditions remain unreported.
A SigAlert was declared by the CHP at 8:47 p.m. after authorities shut down all northbound lanes except one. At 9:05 p.m. the CHP updated the SigAlert by reopening the number 5 and 6 lanes. All lanes were cleared at 11:32 p.m., according to the CHP and the SigAlert was cancelled.
The crash and death investigation created a massive traffic jam on the 405 Freeway in a backup that stretched for miles.
