2 dead, 19 injured in shooting on Detroit's east side, police say
(CBS DETROIT) - Two people were killed and 19 others were injured in a shooting on Detroit's east side early Sunday morning, Michigan State Police say.
The shooting happened in the area of Reno Street and Rossini Drive. Witnesses say the shooting stemmed from a late-night block party.
Officials say a suspect is not in custody.
MSP's Homicide Task Force is assisting the Detroit Police Department in the investigation. Detroit police confirmed that multiple people were shot earlier Sunday morning in the 13000 block of Rossini, and two people had died as a result of the shooting.
"At this time, investigators and forensic personnel are analyzing all available evidence and will be continuing their work through the weekend," the Detroit Police Department said in a statement.
Detroit police said Sunday it will be implementing a new comprehensive strategy regarding block parties and will unveil that plan and provide an update on Sunday's shooting during a press conference with Detroit Police Chief James White and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan Monday morning.
"This is something that's not normal. It's out of the ordinary," said Sandra Turner-Handy, a Community Violence Intervention Team lead. "The fact that it's summer and we have these block parties, these pop-up block parties that happen all over the city, our police department is trying to weed them out, trying to find these block parties so they can shut them down."
If you have any information on this shooting, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
